If you are hiring an intern but want someone else to handle the admin, Hatch Placements is for you.
How can Hatch take the hassle out of hiring?
Hatch can help take the hassle out of hiring by acting as the legal employer of a candidate and on-hiring them to you.
This means that:
You don’t have to do any employment admin! This includes setting up pay and superannuation, and providing legal advice and support.
Candidates do not count as full-time employees.
You can still be fully engaged and flexible with the candidate’s contract.
After going through an easy onboarding process, your candidate simply has to log their hours worked each week and we will organise their pay. You will then approve their timesheets and be invoiced with their pay.
Who can use Hatch Placements?
Any Australian employer with a genuine work opportunity and the employment type is either; Intern, Contract, or Temporary, can use Hatch Placements. It can be listed all year round, for any length of time, and flexible hours.
I don’t have an intern job available yet…
Haven’t thought about hiring an intern before? We suggest you look at different parts of your company that can use an extra helping hand, including things like marketing, design, or reporting. The most important part is that you are giving early career professionals an opportunity to learn valuable skills and become exposed to the workforce.
What if I have a flexible job?
No worries! See below some answers to our common questions.
Any hours your intern works are okay with us (including the weekend), as long as they have been approved by the hiring manager. Note that candidates are paid overtime rates for any hours outside of Monday to Friday 7am - 7pm.
You can also change the end date of the placement at any time. We will remind you before the end of the candidate’s contract to confirm the end date or a contract extension.
We can even increase your candidates' pay if you want to!
As always, reach out to us at ask@hatch.team if you want support in making a change to your role.
What will I be responsible for?
As a Hiring Manager, you are responsible for:
Coordinating any internal company onboarding (e.g. a laptop or office access).
Approving your candidate’s timesheets weekly by Tuesday's close of business to ensure candidates are paid on time.
Paying the invoice sent to your designated payroll email.
What you do NOT have to do (Hatch has got it sorted 😉):
Setting up the employment admin and handling any changes to this.
Acting as the candidate’s legal employer.
Paying the candidate directly.
How much does it cost?
The applicable award rate generally depends on where the person will work, whether they’re a student or graduate, their qualifications, and the type of work they’ll perform. Most standard student roles have an award rate of $33.71 and a charge rate of $49.37 (excl. GST).
Use our pricing calculator to estimate your role’s specific pay rate and your total placement cost.
How much are students paid?
Students are paid according to the most appropriate award rate. Which award rate the student sits under depends on:
What state they are working in: Even for remote jobs, the location of the student is what determines which state’s award rate is used.
If they have graduated: Graduates have a higher award rate than current students and so you will be charged more.
The specific role: Certain types of roles have higher award rates than others, because of the type of work being done.
For example, if you want to hire a current law student to help out with legal work, then their base rate may be $35.30 and you would be charged $49.37 (excl. GST). If you then wanted to hire an engineering graduate, their base rate may be $43.21 and you would be charged $60.43 (excl. GST).
What is included in the invoice?
Hatch charges you for the student’s base pay as well as:
Superannuation
Payroll tax
Workers compensation insurance
Hatch fee (15%)
The specific payroll tax and worker’s compensation insurance varies by state.
We've simplified it all for you in our pricing calculator - simply plug in the placement details and location and we'll give you a clear estimate for the student pay rate and your total placement cost.
Are there any pre-employment check costs?
At the start of your Hatchie’s placement, you will receive a separate invoice for the cost of their pre-employment checks. A standard police and working-rights check is typically $100 + GST. If you require additional checks, please speak to your Hatch contact.
What would make my invoices vary?
The student’s base rate can be increased because of overtime loading and public holidays, on top of the usual casual loading. The general loading multipliers can be seen below:
| Ordinary Hourly Rate | Ordinary Saturday hours | Over-time Monday to Saturday | Over-time Monday to Saturday | Public Holiday |
Casual loading | 0.25 | 0.25 | 0.25 | 0.25 | 0.25 |
Overtime multiplier | 1 | 1.25 | 1.5 | 2 | 2.5 |
Total multiplier | 1.25 | 1.5 | 1.75 | 2.25 | 2.75 |
