How Hatch uses AI in your job search

Written by Support Team

We use AI to help match you with roles you're a good fit for, and to help employers understand your application faster. Here's what that means in practice, and what it doesn't.

The short version

  • AI never decides whether you get a job. Every decision to shortlist, interview or decline is made by a person at the employer.

  • You're never filtered out automatically. If you apply to a role, the employer sees your application.

  • Anything AI writes about you is based on evidence you've given us, and the employer can see that evidence.

  • Your name, email and phone number are never sent to the AI models we use.

What we use AI for

Understanding your profile: When you upload a resume or answer application questions, we use AI to pull out the skills, tools, responsibilities and experience you've described. This builds a picture of what you can actually do, not just the job titles you've held. If you record a video or audio answer, we transcribe it and treat it the same way. You can review and edit anything on your profile.

Recommending roles to you: We compare your skills and experience against the requirements of open roles and suggest ones that fit. We look for partial matches as well as perfect ones, which is how people from adjacent backgrounds find roles they wouldn't have searched for. We also pay attention to the roles you save and open, so recommendations improve over time. If you set your preferences directly, those take priority.

Helping employers review applications: For each application, we generate a short fit summary that explains how your experience lines up with the role's requirements, and where it's a strong, partial or missing match. This helps employers get to your application faster and understand it properly. It always cites the specific things in your profile or answers it's based on.

Ordering applications: Employers see applications ordered by how closely they match the role. This changes the order people appear in, not who the employer can see. Nobody is hidden or auto-rejected.

Scoring answers to application questions: Some roles ask you to answer questions about real situations you've been in. Each answer is scored against a set rubric based on the STARR framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Reflection), so scoring is consistent and the employer can see how a score was reached. Questions come with tips on what a strong answer covers. Read more about how responses are scored.

What we don't do

  • We don't make hiring decisions or reject anyone automatically.

  • We don't screen out applications based on keywords.

  • We don't send your personal details (name, email, phone) to AI providers.

  • We don't allow the AI models we use to train on your data.

  • We don't use your data for marketing.

Where your data lives

Your information is stored in Australia (AWS Sydney) and encrypted in transit and at rest. The AI processing described above runs through OpenAI's API in the US. The text we send is limited to the content needed for matching and excludes your personal identifiers. Access inside Hatch is role-based, limited to the people who need it, and protected by multi-factor authentication.
