How does Hatch Match actually work?

Does AI choose if my application is rejected?

Updated over a week ago

TL;DR Hatch Match is what makes Hatch iconic in the recruitment industry. Make the most of our personalised matching system by completing your profile and applying to new roles. Remember that this is the only part of Hatch that uses AI; your application is still only being reviewed by (human) hiring managers.

šŸ¤ Employment has been one-sided for a long, long time.

Weā€™re on a mission to help everyone find meaning in work. Core to this, is how we think about job searches and matching individuals to roles.

We all know that weā€™re more than the words on our resume, and the experience of being in a role is more than whatā€™s written in the job description. The recruitment process has been stuck in tradition for too long, so itā€™s time we shake it up.

Weā€™re breaking down the world of work into 3 components that matter to both employers and candidates.

  1. Why is this opportunity meaningful? What mission motivates the team, company and candidate to do their best?

  2. What transferable skills and responsibilities does the role require? What are the capabilities of the candidate?

  3. How does the team and candidate like to work day to day? What is the work style necessary to thrive in this role?

We believe that matching across these three categories enable candidates to find meaning in their work, and provide employers with talent that is aligned with their goals and empower their team to achieve their mission.

šŸ¤– This human-centred view is integrated into Hatch using the latest in AI and machine learning.

Itā€™s no longer enough to use keyword matching as a primary way of helping people discover jobs and being hired. As humans, weā€™re a lot more than resumes - and jobs are a lot more than a job title and a list of responsibilities. Our matching model is supercharged by AI to deliver predictions across millions of possible matches while learning how the world of work is viewed by candidates and employers.

We use the concept of a knowledge graph to embed our expertise into our matching models and guide the AI algorithms to learn about the recruitment process, without ingraining the biases that have occurred in the history of hiring. Our knowledge graph includes elements of our holistic fit philosophy (why, what, how), specifically role responsibilities, work styles, and transferable strengths, and creates links between employers and candidates.

This enables us to control the way each data input influences a matching outcome, such as the decision to shortlist a candidate, and use this information to advise applicants on what role they would be great for, and suggest candidates to an employer for a role they havenā€™t applied for yet.

šŸ§‘ā€šŸŽ“ So what does this mean for me?

Simply, this AI mechanism means your Hatch feed is suggesting roles that are genuinely suited to your personality, skills, and values. But, just like a dating app, you need to provide enough information for our algorithm to know what you like. This looks like filling out your profile with what youā€™re looking for, your working style, and an ā€œAbout Meā€ section. Sounding like a lot? We break every part of your profile down in this article making it super straightforward.

Make the most of Hatch Match by applying to roles through Hatch and learning more about what role is perfect for you. Donā€™t be scared to apply for something different to usual! Sometimes, Hatch Match suggests an opportunity you have never considered before but that ends up perfectly suited to your talents and passions.

šŸ“ Does this mean AI is reviewing my application?

No! As much as we love our Hatch Match algorithm, the hiring process is inherently human and we donā€™t want to lose that. Everything that happens after you press ā€œApply Nowā€ is reviewed by a (human) hiring manager.

To give you a behind the scenes look at this process, a recruiter from the company you applied for will look at your profile, and the first thing they see is your Headline and your Intro Video. They can then have a look through your Skills Snapshot and Experience, and analyse how your Working Style matches with their teamā€™s.

You may then be shortlisted, invited to an interview, or rejected, depending on the hiring managerā€™s idea of how well you match the role.

We know thereā€™s still room for growth in terms of transparency and highlighting the humanness of this process, but at the end of the day, we hire YOU first and your resume second, and thatā€™s only possible with the involvement of people.
