Your student ID and background questions

Why we ask, who sees your answers, and what we share with your university

Written by Support Team

When you verify as a student on Hatch, we ask for your student ID and a few quick questions about your background. Here's why we ask, who sees what, and how to change your answers.

At Hatch, your privacy matters. Your background answers are never shown on your profile or to employers, and they never affect the jobs you see or how you're matched.

Why we ask 🌈

Universities and employers want to know whether students from every background are getting a fair go at work. For example, are international students being placed as often as domestic students? Are first-in-family students applying but not hearing back?

Your answers, added up with everyone else's, help them spot where students are missing out and where to put more support.

What we ask 📝

  • Domestic or international: Are you a domestic or international student?

  • Gender: How do you describe your gender?

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin: Are you of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin?

  • Disability: Do you identify as a person with disability or a long-term health condition? We only ask yes or no, never what kind.

  • Parents' education: Has either of your parents or guardians completed a university degree?

  • Year of birth: What year were you born?

Every question has a "Prefer not to say" option, so you only share what you're comfortable with.

Who sees your answers 👀

  • Employers: never see your individual answers. They only see group totals.

  • Your university: never sees your individual answers. It only sees group totals.

A group total looks something like "40 international students from this university applied for jobs this month, and 6 were placed". We never report a group so small that anyone in it could be identified.

We also never send your background answers to analytics, advertising or marketing tools.

Your student ID 🎓

Your student ID is optional. Universities keep their records by student ID, so it's the most reliable way for your university to recognise you.

If you add it, we may share it with your university along with your activity on Hatch, like the jobs you apply for, how far you get in hiring, and any placements you land. Your university uses this to match you to its own records, see how its students are going, and offer you support.

We never:

  • share your student ID with employers

  • show it on your profile

  • give your university your individual background answers

Changing your answers ✏️

You can update your student ID and background answers anytime in the Background section of your account settings.

Pro tip: changed your mind about sharing something? Switch it to "Prefer not to say"

FAQs

Do my answers affect which jobs I'm recommended?

No. The tools we use to recommend jobs and suggest candidates to employers, including AI, don't use your background answers or your student ID. Employers make all hiring decisions.

Do I have to answer?

You need to go through the questions, but you can choose "Prefer not to say" for any of them. Your student ID is optional, so you can leave it blank and add it later.

Can an employer find out how I answered?

No. Employers only see totals for groups of students, and we never report a group small enough for anyone to be identified.

Our Privacy Policy covers exactly how we collect, use and share your information. If anything's unclear, reach out at ask@hatch.team and we'll help.
